Overview of the Role
We are seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and diligent Research Scientist to join our Chemistry team. You will play a key role in supporting the in-house production of peptides and the development of new capabilities within our chemistry laboratory. You will produce synthetic peptides (linear, cyclic, modified, bioconjugated to a range of biomolecules) in relation to internal and external projects. You will also support Orbit’s unique peptide display platform and help to broaden its capabilities by developing new building blocks and ligation techniques. The position is a lab-based role, demanding a proactive mindset, along with good time-management and organisational skills, an ability for problem solving, flexibility and attention to detail. The successful candidate will be given opportunities for training and development and will be encouraged to contribute to implementing new technologies and processes.Job Responsibilities
- Synthesize and modify peptides in solution and solid phase. Synthesize protected amino acid derivatives, various small molecules, and custom resin modification.
- Perform peptide modifications including biotinylation, fluorophore probes, and others.
- Perform and optimise peptide cyclisation.
- Perform peptide analysis by LC-MS and peptide purification using preparative HPLC and flash chromatography.
- Ensure that tasks are completed professionally and safely.
- Identify and develop novel techniques/capabilities to support the platform.
- Analyse, interpret and summarise results for presentation at internal meetings.
- Document research findings clearly in an electronic lab book.
- Produce project plans, reports, and SOPs.
- Contribute to general lab duties.
Job Requirements
Essential
- Prior laboratory research experience with synthesis and purification of peptides and small molecules.
- Expertise with biocompatible conjugation chemistry such as NCL and Click chemistry.
- Capacity to execute tasks independently to achieve company goals on an established timeline.
- Knowledge of, and appreciation for, laboratory safety procedures.
- Willingness to learn new techniques.
- Strong communication and team working skills.
- Capable of independently troubleshooting technical issues and ability to develop a solid understanding of the direction and design of a given project.
Desirable
- Experience with DNA—drug conjugation chemistry.
- Experience with peptide display technologies.
- Proficiency in software such as SciFinder, PyMol and ChemDraw.
